Bastogne was a road town. Seven highways met there, and inthe Ardennes in winter an army that wanted to move needed those roads. So the Germans surrounded it and asked the Americans inside to surrender.
The acting commander, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe, replied: "Nuts!"
The siege held from December 20 to December 26. Then tanks from Patton's Third Army broke through from the south and the road opened.
They stood when standing cost everything. A heavy woodtype stamp across the back, distressed like aninked impression on a field document. The archive block beneath it stays clean and legible, because the record is
