They were told to hold the bridge for two days.
On 17 September 1944, British paratroopers dropped into the Netherlands and marched for the road bridge at Arnhem. Only a fraction of the force reached it. The 2nd Battalion of the
Parachute Regiment, under Lieutenant Colonel John Frost,took the northern end that evening. Around seven hundred men, and no way back.
Relief never arrived. They held for four days.
Arnhem is remembered as a defeat. The bridge was not taken and held. The operation failed. And the men who fought there are honoured anyway, which tells you something about what we
actually measure.
Glory fades. Honor remains.
