They were told to prepare to use indigenous animals for transportation. That was the warning. Forty-eight hours later they found out it meant horses.
On 19 October 19, 2001 a twelve-man Special Forces team and two Air Force combat controllers flew from a former Soviet airbase in Uzbekistan, three hundred kilometres across the Hindu Kush at sixteen thousand feet, in zero visibility. They landed in a farmer's field at two in the morning in the Dari-a-Souf Valley, and linked up with a Northern Alliance commander who had no trucks.
So they rode. Nobody had saddles. They used local horses and local tack and worked it out on the ground. A thirty-two-year-old captain from a Kansas cattle farm led the first American cavalry patrol since WW2, calling in air strikes from horseback.
On November 10, Mazar-i-Sharif fell.
