On November 14, 1965 helicopters set down at a clearing in the Ia Drang Valley named LZ X-Ray. For three days a battalion of the 7th Cavalry held that ground against a force that outnumbered it. On November 16, they were lifted out. The valley was not taken. It was not kept. Within days the enemy moved back through it.
Ask what was won, and the map gives no answer.
Not every victory is measured in ground taken.
